PROF. (DR.) SUPRIYA LAIFANGBAM is presently working as DEAN at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), in the state of MANIPUR in INDIA. She is married to PROF.(DR.) VYAS KHONGBANTABAM who is a Neurosurgeon. She has two sons, Nehal working in London and Nikhil studying in California. She has worked in the State Health Department for about 30 years in various capacities. As a Clinical Microbiologist and an academician teaching MBBS (undergraduate medical), BDS (undergraduate dental) and MD (postgraduate) courses, she has published 21 research papers in Indexed Medical journals. She has also completed a Research project entitled ” A multicentric study on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) from Northeastern region of India: Early Diagnosis to Research potential for understanding Disease pathogenesis” in collaboration with the INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH (ICMR) – NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY (NIIH), MUMBAI and 5 other medical institutions in North East India, as the Principal Investigator. She has set up the IMMUNOLOGY LAB in the Microbiology Department, JNIMS for the diagnosis of Auto-immune Diseases. She is In-Charge and Lab Director of the STATE REFERENCE LABORATORY FOR HIV TESTING under the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), New Delhi. The laboratory is accredited by the NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD FOR TESTING AND CALIBRATION LABORATORIES (NABL). Her works and research with HIV/AIDS has led to her interest and research in other viral infections with similar modes of transmission such as the Hepatitits B & C viruses and also Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). She is Nodal Officer of two National Health Programmes at JNIMS under the NATIONAL CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL (NCDC) in collaboration with the WHO and the CDC – These are firstly the National ONE HEALTH programme for Zoonoses and secondly the National AMR Containment programme. As the Head of Department, Microbiology Department, JNIMS she has worked as the Member Secretary for the JNIMS HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL COMMITTEE (HICC). She has published several policies for JNIMS, such as the IPC Guidelines, COVID IPC Guidelines, Antibiotic Policy. During the COVID Pandemic, she has organized several trainings for the doctors, nurses & ward attendants before they were posted in the COVID wards at JNIMS. She has worked as the Member secretary, Coordinator and now Chairman of the Medical Education Unit (MEU) at JNIMS since 2013. She has completed the One-Year ADVANCE COURSE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION (ACME) from SRMC & RI, CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu in 2015. She has conducted several FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES, those prescribed by the NATIONAL MEDICAL COMMISSION (NMC) and those in-house devised at MEU, JNIMS. Today approximately 90% of the faculty members are trained and certified for implementing the new COMPETENCY BASED MEDICAL EDUCATION, thereby making them eligible for promotion.
